Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams such as CGL, CHSL and MTS are among the most popular government job exams in India. Lakhs of candidates apply every year, so a clear strategy is important — especially if you are just starting.
Know the four core subjects
- Quantitative Aptitude – arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data interpretation.
- Reasoning – series, analogies, coding-decoding, puzzles and non-verbal reasoning.
- English – grammar, vocabulary and comprehension.
- General Awareness – history, polity, geography, science and current affairs.
Start with basics, then shortcuts
Many beginners jump straight to tricks. First build your basics — tables up to 30, squares, cubes, percentages and ratios. Shortcuts work only when your fundamentals are strong.
Make a daily routine
Practise Maths and Reasoning every day, read English for 30 minutes, and revise GK notes regularly. Keep a small notebook for formulas and mistakes.
Mock tests are a must
From the second month, take at least two mock tests a week. Analyse each one: which section is weak, where you lose time, and which questions to skip.
In SSC exams, accuracy is as important as speed — negative marking can reduce your score.
